ANOTHER NEW VOICE HAS JOINED THE RANKS OF ASKSTEVE.CO.ZA’S CITIZEN JOURNO SQUAD: KATLEGO. A LONG TIME READER AND NOW AN AUTHOR. WELCOME MATE!
KICKING IT OFF WITH ONE OF THE MOST NECESSARY DEVICES SINCE AN IPHONE BATTERY PACK.

The TrackR Bravo is a coin-sized Bluetooth based device that syncs with an app on your IOS7 or Android 4.4 device to work as a sort of radar giving you the distance between your smartphone and the missing item.

Now, before you start erecting temples and sending me your virgin daughters as tribute in praise of my ethereal powers, I must confess that I’m speaking from personal experience. I, like you, have misplaced and been forced to replace more than my fair share of keys, bags, portable hard drives and children. Well the good folks over at TrackR have the solution for this most common piece of universal annoyance.

This coin-sized Bluetooth device attaches to the item you can’t live without and talks to an app on your smart device. The smart device app activates a tone on the missing item to help you pinpoint the exact location of it. And in a genius move, the small button on the TrackR Bravo can be used to make your phone ring in case it gets lost, reversing the role of the device.

This nifty feature, and the fact that one smartphone can sync with up to 10 TrackR Bravo’s makes this a definite must-have for the mobile junkie on the go who needs to keep track of a smartphone, a laptop, keys, a dog, portable hard drive, a wallet, gym bag, a briefcase and virtually every tool of modern life.
Now for the community bit: If your missing item is out of your smartphones range, don’t despair. If other TrackR users get within range of your item, it will automatically ping the last known location of your item via the network or “Crowd GPS”. You thought I was joking about the dog?!?

Of course this last feature does rely heavily on the assumption that a lot of people around you also own a TrackR Bravo. Unfortunately reaching critical mass is the only way that anything that relies on the crowd will work.
The TrackR Bravo is very discreet at 3.5mm and 31mm across and is built to weather the elements in its solid metal casing. It also comes equipped with a CR1616 coin cell battery which lasts for one year in the device and is easy to replace.

One of the most promising features is the company’s faith and commitment in their product. They are currently giving away about R2 million worth of units to people who sign up on their website here to build a network of users and to give current and future customers a monumentally better service via Crowd GPS

So yes, the pinnacle of modern technology is adults playing Marco Polo every morning with their car keys.
