Big news for the portable and wearable tech fans, South African cool stuff distributor SMAC have signed up Jabra to the stable of gadgets that they distribute in SA.

This means more well-made, top-end headset, speakerphone and wireless communication solutions. Let’s start things off with Jabra’s go at the difficult-to-get-right sports headphone market. Here’s their Sport Wireless+.

First off the Sport Wireless+ headphones are in-ear, round the neck wireless headphones that are made very well and immediately reassure you that the sweating you’ll be doing in this year’s Iron Man won’t hurt them one bit.

They’re made up of your typical over the ear design connected to one another by a thin strap of what looks like a black type of flat pasta.

I’ve said it numerous times, I hate in-ear headphone solutions, but sadly when it comes to working out, they are the obvious choice. Also a common gripe is that nobody has seemed to be able to crack the right design or product to make me happy when working out with headphones in my ear.

Jabra’s Sport Wireless+ have so far come closest though, and it’s all down to their vast offering of 7 yellow eargels to choose from depending on what fits best in your ear. This works and I’m confirming that you will find an eargel that will fit and feel comfortable.

(Unless your ears are as mangled as UFC hall of famer Randy Coutoure’s?)

Use of the Jabra Sport Wireless+ is straightforward: a button on the right earpiece lets you skip tracks, control volume, and switch FM radio (radio means you don’t need to take your smartphone with you if you’re scared of getting robbed). Honourable mention to the Bluetooth call taking abilities which is a really nice touch while going for a jog. I wouldn’t suggest taking calls while at the gym though as you run the risk of looking like a poncy, entitled JSE trader who has better things to do and only comes to gym to show off his recently purchased 2nd-hand Porsche.

Owning a Porsche might help as these aren’t for the student runner trying out for the Varsity track team. Quality comes at a price though.

Audio is crisp and clear for a Bluetooth connection and yes they go on about the bass and all that. Everything is as it should be. As always, we’re about lifestyle, not tech.

And speaking of lifestyle, I mentioned above the Jabra Sports Wireless+ make you feel like no sweat will be their undoing. That’s confirmed with their rain, dust and shock proof rating by US military standards.
