BMW’s 4 Series can be seen on South African roads from November, and while 4 is a whole new number to BMW fans, this is in fact not actually a whole new car.

You’ll be familiar with the 4 Series Coupe in the form of BMW’s current 3 Series Coupe which it replaces. 2-doors, short-wheel base, Arnie-esque muscles and power enough to keep the grumpiest of petrolheads happy. So why then is everyone making such a big noise about this car?
Because it’s bleedin’ epic. That’s why.

I’m superficial as you know, so that new number on the back got me all excited and revvy. And after the first drive, I’m pleased to report that not an ounce of that adrenalin was wasted.

There are three variants on offer in the new 4 Series. They’re all petrol with a diesel version possible but not promised in the new year: 420i at 135kw, that’s about the same power that comes in the old Golf GTi, a 428i with 180kw and a monster 435i with a very decent 225kw.

As they’re all petrol, power delivery is instantaneous and they’re all coupled to a 8-speed automatic gearbox or you can save some cash and be a real driver and get a manual.

Next question is: how does it look? Answer? Chiselled. Seriously, I haven’t seen a more muscular car (that I’m actually attracted) to in a long time. Curves abound and muscles protrude and this is a good thing because you’ll know you’re standing next to it when you’re um…standing next to it. Sadly there isn’t a crash diet that will guarantee this sort of bod; you’ll need to opt for the M-Sport body package which comes at a price of about R20 000 on the standard price. Trust me, it’s worth it.

Last important feature to mention is the absolutely sublime ride and control in this Coupe. I’m not sure what they’re making the suspension and wheels out of at BMW these days, but I’d hazard to guess that butter, bum cream and a kiss from Mila Kunis have something to do with the recipe. Everything about this car is smooth, from the familiar, high-end BMW interior to the immediate jet-off from the lights to the newly upgraded BMW iDrive system.
Oh, and it’s practical, and don’t believe those that say it isn’t. It seats four adults (relatively well) and the boot is a boot, not a foot locker for golf shoes.

These sorts of features mean that the new 4 Series should look at home in the hands of anyone from a 25-year-old who has done too well for himself to divorcee going through a mid-life crisis.
