And it was accompanied in Paris by a new song from Lana Del Rey. Don’t worry, I don’t know who she is either. I think she’s related to Billy Ray Cyrus.

It is exciting to see an all new Jag though. And the new F-Type throws back to Jags heyday, when they were known for their convertible two-seater sports cars that delivered performance, and appeared in the opening scenes of James Bond movies. Not like the rep it’s got these days of delivering the 1% to their tee-time at the Houghton golf club.

Off the bat the F-Type has all the right ingredients: Jaguar’s industry –leading aluminium chassis architecture, so it’s lightweight. The engine’s in the front and the power is in the back so cornering might not be quick, but it will be fun. And there’s no roof, so passers-by will know you’ve got loads of money and are thinning on top.

Driver involvement is key. They’ve separated the tag-along passenger with a grab handle on the center console so they’ve got something to hold on to should you flip it on Chapman’s Peak. The fighter plane example is used again, all controls ergonomically grouped by function and a joystick-shaped SportShift takes you through the 8-speeds. And they’ve reduced driver guilt by going green: half the content of the car comes from recycled material and the manufacturing process emits 80% less CO2 emissions.

Three models will be available – F-TYPE, F-TYPE S and the F-TYPE V8 S. They are powered respectively by Jaguar’s new 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine in 250kW and 280kW outputs and its 5.0-litre V8 supercharged petrol producing 364kW

The range-topping F-TYPE V8S will reach 100km/h in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 300km/h. The 280kW V6 F-TYPE S will reach 100km/h in 4.8 seconds and 275km/h, the equivalent figures for the F-TYPE are 5.1 seconds and 260km/h
